PROGRAM DESCRIPTON
5 Types of Counseling/Consultation Services Offered:
- Critical Incident Stress Debriefing:
Individual or group crisis counseling provided in the aftermath
of a traumatic event--such as a suicide or murder in a child’s
family--with the goal of mitigating acute psychological symptoms,
assessing the need for further counseling, providing a sense
of closure, and offering information about community resources.
- Assessment (to determine need for Counseling Services):
This is a 10-hour assessment of the child within her school
and family environment to determine the suitability of psychological
(behavioral health) counseling. The assessment will include
a 1-hour observation of the child in the classroom and at
recess/lunch time, along with a 3-hour individual assessment
of the child within a play therapy context. Behavioral and
symptom checklists will be administered to the child, to relevant
school personnel, and/or to the child’s parents. These
checklists will be the basis of a 1-hour clinical interview
with the child’s teacher and a 1-hour psychosocial interview
with the child’s parents. Should counseling be deemed
beneficial, a summary of treatment goals and interventions
will be provided to relevant staff members and to the child’s
parents.
- Individual Counseling:
Children needing psychological counseling will meet individually
with a Counselor who is a registered marriage and family therapy
intern and who is working under the supervision of a licensed
psychologist. Counseling will be performed through the medium
of play and will include elements of art therapy; drama therapy;
sand play; cognitive-behavioral techniques; projective (psychoanalytic)
interventions; guided imagery; relaxation and self-soothing
practices; bibliotherapy (storytelling); and psychoeducation.
Throughout treatment, the Behavioral Consultant will also
meet with school staff and the child’s parents in order
to provide support and clinical recommendations. These supplemental
sessions will be conducted as needed to support the treatment
plan, and as availability of staff and parents permits. Referrals
to relevant community agencies will be provided, and the Counselor
will also collaborate with other professionals who are involved
in the child’s treatment--such as a pediatrician, psychiatrist,
or educational specialist.
- Group Social Skills/Class/Team:
Upon request, a Behavioral Consultant may be available to
facilitate a classroom discussion regarding a topic that has
been affecting a large number of students in a particular
class or grade. Such topics might include social skills, bullying,
embracing diversity, or grief and loss.
- Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a field within psychology
that studies, simply put, why we do what we do. It is the
study of human behavior, what affects it, how it can be changed,
and, very importantly, focuses on objective data as the basis
for making decisions and determining effectiveness. Beyond
just the study of behavior, ABA is the application of behavioral
principles to socially significant behaviors.
