{"id":240,"date":"2016-09-14T00:07:46","date_gmt":"2016-09-14T00:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genesisbehaviorcenter.com\/lasvegas-nv\/fragile-learner-model\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T09:25:34","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T09:25:34","slug":"fragile-learner-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genesisbehaviorcenter.com\/lasvegas-nv\/fragile-learner-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Fragile Learner Model"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>A child can be considered <strong>fragile<\/strong> when there are certain events that are causing or contributing to that child feeling extraordinarily stressed, in turn leading to the child experiencing difficulty effectively managing his\/her day (sometimes referred to as \u201cSetting Events\u201d; for the purpose of this model, these events will be labeled \u201c<strong>Context Events<\/strong>\u201d). Context Events can have happened further back in time but continue to affect the present and\/or can be situations that children \u201cbring with\u201d them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive Context Events<\/strong> can set the stage for success.\u00a0<strong>Adverse Context Events<\/strong> can negatively affect a child\u2019s ability to cope with educational programming, social relationships and behavioral management.<!--more--><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The following\u00a0strategies need to be crafted specifically for the individual child in accord with the child&#8217;s personal learning experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structure:<\/strong> Structure is increased for the fragile child.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demands:<\/strong> Demands are decreased whenever possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reinforcement:<\/strong> Levels of reinforcement for work and appropriate behaving should be increased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The full Fragile Learner Model, as well as a video explanation, can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/firstpathautism.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FirstPath Autism<\/a> site\u2019s video library. Examples of Context Events that can negatively impact children are:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2022 Physiological Variables<br \/>\n\u2022 Learning History Variables<br \/>\n\u2022 Emotional Variables<br \/>\n\u2022 Extraordinary Transition Variables<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Typically, children feel helpless over Context Events because they have little-to-no control over them (and, frequently the adults involved don&#8217;t either). An adult who has tried to get through a work day while suffering a migraine or after having received a less-than-favorable job evaluation that day has probably felt a sense of fragility similar to what a fragile child feels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE:<\/strong> One important consideration when implementing a Fragile Learning Model is to do so without the child \u201ccatching on\u201d that it is being done based on the child&#8217;s behavior &#8212; in other words, we don&#8217;t want the child to know that we are decreasing demands, increasing structure, and increasing reinforcement based on the child&#8217;s behavior.
